Hidden Cruise Costs and How to Avoid Them

Use a Trusted Travel Advisor

Cruising is probably my favorite way to travel—and for good reason! You only have to unpack once, yet you get to explore multiple destinations, enjoy incredible food, entertainment, and those unbeatable ocean views. It’s such a fun and relaxing way to vacation. That said, there are a few sneaky costs that can catch travelers off guard. As someone who’s booked hundreds of cruises, I’m here to help you avoid those budget-busting surprises and make the most of every dollar.

1. Gratuities (Tips)

The Cost: Most cruise lines automatically add daily gratuities (or "crew appreciation") to your onboard account. This usually ranges from $14 to $20 per person, per day. Gratuities are not negotiable in my opinion. They go to hardworking crew members that you may or may not ever even meet—helping to keep your stateroom clean, creating your meals, and so much more.

How to Avoid the Surprise: I usually suggest adding the gratuities when you book your cruise so that once you're onboard, they're already taken care of and you can relax without worrying about extra charges.

2. Specialty Dining

The Cost: While main dining rooms and buffets are included, many ships offer specialty restaurants (steakhouses, sushi, Italian, etc.) at an extra charge—typically $30 to $90 per person.

How to Save: Try one specialty night and enjoy the included venues for the rest. Some cruise lines offer dining packages—ask me if your ship has one!

3. Shore Excursions

The Cost: Excursions can range from $30 to $300+ per person, depending on the activity.

How to Save: While booking excursions directly through the cruise line is the most convenient option, I help my clients—depending on the itinerary—compare those with trusted third-party vendors that often offer smaller group sizes, more personalized service, and better pricing. Or explore the port on your own with my curated self-guided suggestions.

4. Beverages

The Cost: Water, soda, coffee, and alcoholic drinks outside of meal times may cost extra. Drink packages can be $60–$100+ per day per person.

How to Save: Let me help you find the cruise line that fits your preferences best. Some cruise lines include soft drinks in their fare or offer café cards that are perfect if you prioritize specialty coffee over alcoholic beverages. Look for cruise promotions that bundle in drink packages, or decide what’s worth it based on your personal habits.

5. Wi-Fi and Internet Access

The Cost: Internet onboard can be shockingly expensive—plans can cost $15–$30 per day or more.

How to Save: Disconnect and enjoy being unplugged. Or purchase a package in advance, which is often cheaper than buying onboard.

6. Photos and Souvenirs

The Cost: Onboard photographers capture every moment—but buying those pics can cost $20–$40 each. Gift shop prices can also be high.

How to Save: I’ve personally made a costly mistake in this category that I hope helps you avoid the same. My family once accepted a complimentary “sitting” for formal night photos. When we returned to view them, we found ourselves in a high-pressure, behind-closed-doors sales pitch. While we walked away with beautiful pictures, we also walked away over $1,000 lighter—simply because we weren’t prepared and gave in to the pressure. Be aware of these tactics. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with purchasing a few of your favorite photos, but go in with a plan and budget. Don’t feel obligated to purchase more than you truly want.

7. Onboard Activities & Classes

The Cost: Some experiences—like wine tastings, fitness classes, or escape rooms—come with extra fees.

How to Save: There are still plenty of free activities onboard. Check the daily schedule and plan ahead so you don't get upsold on extras.

8. Transportation and Parking

The Cost: Getting to and from the port (flights, transfers, parking) isn’t part of your cruise fare.

How to Save: I help you find reliable and affordable transfer options and can advise on port parking or pre-cruise hotel packages that include parking. Better yet, let me handle your entire travel bundle—from flights and hotels to transfers and parking—so everything is seamless and stress-free.
