🏝️ Melissa’s Top 5: Cruise Line Private Islands
MSC’s Ocean Cay Marine Reserve
One of the best-kept secrets in cruising? Many cruise lines have their own private islands, and they are absolute paradise. Whether you're traveling with kids, looking for a peaceful escape, or want something in between, there's a private island experience just for you.
Here are my Top 5 favorite private islands that you can cruise to:
1. Perfect Day at CocoCay (Royal Caribbean)
This one lives up to the name — it’s a perfect day for families, couples, and adventure-seekers alike. Royal Caribbean’s private island in the Bahamas offers Thrill Waterpark with towering slides, a wave pool, and a zip line. There’s also Splashaway Bay for little ones, plus Oasis Lagoon, the largest freshwater pool in the Caribbean.
Perfect Day is especially fantastic for families, with so many activities that kids (and adults) will absolutely love. Whether you’re lounging in a floating cabana or racing down slides, there’s something for everyone.
Stay tuned — Royal Caribbean is bringing even more fun in the next two years with exciting new destinations like Perfect Day at Mexico (Costa Maya), Royal Beach Club at Nassau, and Royal Beach Club at Cozumel. More unforgettable experiences are just on the horizon!

2. Ocean Cay Marine Reserve (MSC Cruises)
Looking for something more laid-back and eco-conscious? Ocean Cay, owned by MSC Cruises, is a former industrial site turned tropical haven. It’s all about relaxation and natural beauty — white sand beaches, turquoise waters, and no loud attractions.
What makes Ocean Cay special is that many MSC itineraries stay late or overnight, and guests can enjoy a beautiful laser light show at the lighthouse after sunset. It’s peaceful, romantic, and perfect for travelers looking to slow down and soak in the views.
3. Half Moon Cay (Holland America Line & Carnival)
Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas is consistently voted one of the top private island destinations in the world — and for good reason. Think powdery white beaches, horseback riding by the sea, and tranquil lagoon waters.
It's a great balance of relaxing and fun, and there are whispers of exciting expansions coming soon to make this gem even better.
4. Disney’s Private Islands: Castaway Cay & Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point (Disney Cruise Line)
Disney does everything with magic, and their private island experiences are no exception. Castaway Cay is a dream come true for families, offering a safe, beautiful environment with Disney-style service. From character meet-and-greets to water play areas and snorkeling lagoons, it’s a hit with kids and adults alike. There's even a separate adults-only beach called Serenity Bay for those looking to relax.
Now, with their brand-new private destination Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point on Eleuthera, Bahamas, Disney adds even more magic. It blends Bahamian culture with Disney creativity, featuring local art, beautiful beaches, and immersive experiences designed for all ages.
Whether you're sailing to Castaway Cay or Lookout Cay, you're guaranteed an unforgettable family-friendly escape.

5. Great Stirrup Cay (Norwegian Cruise Line)
Great Stirrup Cay, Norwegian Cruise Line’s private island in the Bahamas, is a perfect spot for a relaxing beach day. With soft white sands, calm blue waters, and plenty of space to unwind, it’s a favorite for cruisers who just want to kick back and soak up the sun. You can rent a cabana, snorkel in clear waters, or simply sway in a hammock under the palms.
Carnival is also upping its game and entering the private island space in a big way. Their brand-new destination, Celebration Key, is set to open in late July 2025, and I’ll be checking it out myself on one of the very first sailings the first weekend of August. I can’t wait to share what it’s like and help more cruisers experience this exciting new spot!
