🌟 Melissa’s Top 5: Must-Do Experiences in Athens, Greece
View from below the Acropolis
I started my Top-5 series with some of my favorite U.S. places to visit (if you missed them, go check those out!), however, its time to go international.
I recently had the incredible opportunity to explore Athens, Greece, and let me tell you — it was everything I hoped for and more. From ancient wonders to island escapes and breathtaking monasteries, Athens is a city that blends history, culture, and soul-soothing beauty.
If you're dreaming of visiting Greece, I’d love to help you plan an incredible itinerary — and here are my Top 5 favorite things to include during a stay in Athens:
1. Step into Ancient History: The Ruins of Athens
You can’t visit Athens without walking in the footsteps of the ancient world. The Acropolis, crowned by the Parthenon, is absolutely iconic — but don’t stop there. Be sure to explore the Temple of Olympian Zeus, the Roman Agora, Hadrian’s Library, and Kerameikos. Everywhere you turn, history surrounds you. It’s humbling and awe-inspiring to stand where philosophers, poets, and emperors once stood.

2. Day Trip to the Islands: Poros, Hydra & Aegina
Everyone knows about Santorini and Mykonos, and yes, they’re stunning — but they’re also incredibly busy. For something more authentic and relaxing, take a ferry from Athens to the Saronic Islands. I personally visited:
Poros – Quaint, peaceful, and full of local charm
Aegina – Home to the impressive Temple of Aphaia, one of Greece’s best-preserved ruins
Hydra – No cars allowed! The island runs on donkey transport, and it’s one of the most unique places I’ve ever been
These islands are perfect for a laid-back day of exploring, swimming, and soaking up Greek island life — all without the crowds.
Hydra was my absolute favorite island
3. Visit Meteora and Delphi: A Sacred, Scenic Day Trip
Temple of Apollo - Delphi
One of the most unforgettable experiences was an overnight trip from Athens to Meteora, where centuries-old monasteries cling to the edges of towering rock formations. Some are still active and accessible, and the views? Just wow.
We also stopped at Delphi, home to the Temple of Apollo — a must for history lovers. Seeing these places in person is something I’ll never forget.

4. Witness the Changing of the Guards
Back in Athens, don’t miss the Changing of the Guards at Syntagma Square in front of the Hellenic Parliament. This isn’t your typical guard change — it’s a beautifully choreographed tradition performed in full ceremonial dress. The pride and precision of the Evzones (elite ceremonial soldiers) is a powerful reminder of Greek heritage.

5. Taste Your Way Through Athens: Food Tour Delight
You haven’t truly experienced Greece until you’ve eaten your way through it! I took an incredible food tour that wandered through local neighborhoods and included a walk through the Athens Central Market, where fresh fish, meat, and produce come alive in an open-air frenzy of color and aroma.
I now have a local contact who does these tours — so ask me about it!
Also… if you’ve ever wondered what the difference is between Greek coffee and Turkish coffee, I’ve got a funny story for you — and a few opinions from both sides 😉
Athens is more than a stop on the way to the islands — it’s a full experience in itself. Whether you're a history buff, foodie, or just love incredible views and stories, this city delivers.
Greek Coffee - yes, my face was super red. It gets HOT in the summer in Greece (it was 100 degrees this day)
