Top 10 Things to Pack for an Alaska Cruise (Don’t Forget These Essentials!)
Skagway, Alaska
I’m headed to Seattle in just a few days to set sail on another amazing Alaska cruise! As I’m preparing to pack, I thought it would be the perfect time to share my must-have items for anyone cruising to the Last Frontier. Alaska is one of the most breathtaking places on earth, but packing smart is key to enjoying every moment. Here are my top recommendations:
Travel-Size Binoculars
Don’t miss those once-in-a-lifetime wildlife moments! Whether it’s spotting whales from your balcony, bald eagles soaring overhead, or a bear along the shoreline, binoculars let you bring the scenery closer.
These are what I found on Amazon. They are compact and easy to carry with you. Click here for Amazon link.
Layered Clothing
The weather in Alaska can change in an instant. Think layers: short-sleeve tops, cozy flannels, a puffy jacket, rain gear, a warm hat, gloves, and comfortable jeans. Leave the formal evening wear at home—Alaska cruising is all about the rugged outdoors.
Swimsuit
Yes, you’ll want one! After a long day in port, nothing feels better than relaxing in a hot tub while you watch the mountains and glaciers glide by.
Rain Gear
From Ketchikan to Juneau, Alaska is known for showers. A lightweight rain jacket or poncho and waterproof shoes will keep you comfortable so you can focus on exploring.
Comfortable, Rugged Shoes
You’ll be walking on uneven trails, docks, and sometimes muddy paths. Waterproof hiking shoes or sturdy sneakers are a must for shore excursions.
Extra Camera Batteries or Portable Charger
Between glaciers, wildlife, and charming port towns, you’ll be taking more photos than you think. The cold can also drain batteries faster, so come prepared.
Fuel Rods like this are a great option. I take these everywhere. Many places like Disney World and Universal Studios even have Fuel Rod kiosks where you change exchange empty fuel rod for a new charged up ready to go. Click here for link.
Day Pack or Small Backpack
Perfect for excursions—carry your rain jacket, water bottle, camera gear, and any souvenirs you pick up while exploring. Choose one that’s waterproof or at least water-resistant so your belongings stay dry if you’re caught in rain or out on the water.
Sunscreen & Sunglasses
It may surprise you, but the sun reflecting off the water and glaciers can be intense. Protect your skin and eyes, even on cloudy days.
Hand Warmers
For those glacier-viewing days on deck, a few disposable hand warmers in your pockets make all the difference.
Mosquito Repellent
Yes, Alaska has mosquitoes the size of small planes—especially in port towns and wilderness areas. Pack a good repellent so they don’t ruin your outdoor adventures.

Final Thoughts
Packing for Alaska is all about comfort and practicality. Bring items that will keep you warm, dry, and ready for adventure—and leave the extras behind. Whether it’s standing on your balcony with binoculars as a whale breaches in the distance or soaking in a hot tub while mountains pass by, having the right gear ensures you can soak up every unforgettable moment.
