Discover MSC Cruises: European Cruise Line making waves in the US Market

When most American travelers think of cruising, names like Royal Caribbean, Carnival, and Norwegian often come to mind. But there's a rising star in the U.S. cruise market that’s making waves—MSC Cruise Line.

Each experience has showcased MSC's commitment to quality and unique onboard atmosphere.

Who is MSC??

MSC (Mediterranean Shipping Company) may not be a household name in the United States just yet, but globally, they’re a powerhouse. As the world’s largest privately-owned cruise line and the largest shipping company in the world, MSC was founded by Gianluigi Aponte in 1970 as a shipping company. Since then, they have grown into a major player in both the shipping and cruise industries. With roots in Europe, they’ve built a reputation for sophisticated ships, European elegance, and a commitment to environmental sustainability.

Branching Out Beyond Europe

While MSC is widely recognized and celebrated across Europe, their presence in the American market is relatively new. Until recently, most of their U.S. sailings were out of Florida and New York. However, MSC has big plans to expand their reach and capture the attention of American cruisers.

New Ports of Call: Galveston and Alaska

MSC Poesia will begin sailing to Alaska in May 2026

MSC is making strategic moves to solidify its presence in the U.S. They’re putting the finishing touches on a brand-new terminal in Galveston, Texas, which is set to open in November 2025. This move will allow MSC to attract cruisers from the central and southern U.S., offering more convenient departure options.

In addition, MSC plans to start sailing the Alaskan market in May 2026. This is a bold and exciting step, as Alaska has long been dominated by other major cruise lines. MSC’s unique approach—blending European luxury with accessible pricing—could set them apart and draw new fans to their brand.

What Sets MSC Apart?

MSC Cruises offers a distinct experience that’s different from most mainstream American cruise lines. Here’s why they stand out:

1. European Flair: The onboard experience is designed to feel like a European holiday. You’ll find an emphasis on international cuisine, refined entertainment, and stylish design.

2. Luxury at a Great Value: While offering a high-end experience, MSC often comes at a lower price point compared to luxury competitors. Their MSC Yacht Club is a favorite for those seeking an all-inclusive, VIP experience with butler service and private amenities.

3. Sustainability Efforts: MSC is committed to reducing its environmental impact. They’ve invested in new technologies to minimize carbon emissions and have been recognized for their eco-friendly initiatives.

4. Family-Friendly Atmosphere: MSC partners with LEGO and Chicco, creating kid-friendly spaces and activities. Plus, kids often sail for free, making MSC a budget-friendly choice for families.

Why Should You Consider MSC?

If you’re looking for a cruise line that breaks the mold, MSC is worth considering. Their mix of European sophistication, diverse itineraries, and expanding U.S. presence makes them an intriguing option for both first-time cruisers and seasoned travelers looking for something different.

My Personal Experience with MSC

I’ve personally experienced the elegance and charm of MSC Cruises firsthand. I sailed on the MSC Seaside in 2018 and the MSC Meraviglia in 2022, and I was truly impressed by the blend of European sophistication and modern amenities. I'm also looking forward to sailing on the brand new MSC World America later this month to celebrate my birthday! It's going to be an unforgettable experience, and I can't wait to see what this incredible ship has to offer—especially the dry slide that looks like a shark, which I'm particularly excited about! (Don't worry, I'll have pictures and video!) Each experience has showcased MSC's commitment to quality and unique onboard atmosphere.
