Big Changes Are Here: Norwegian Cruise Line Unveils Major Enhancements at Great Stirrup Cay

One of my goals this year is to keep you up to date with the latest cruise news that actually impacts your vacation experience—and this is a big one.

Guests sailing with Norwegian Cruise Line in late 2025 became the very first cruisers to experience exciting new enhancements at Great Stirrup Cay, NCL’s private island in the Bahamas. These long-anticipated upgrades officially opened just in time for the new year, and they mark a major transformation of this already-popular stop.

A Brand-New Pier (Finally!)

One of the most significant upgrades is the new pier, which means ships can now dock directly at the island instead of relying on tender boats. In practical terms, this nearly eliminates the chance of missing a Great Stirrup Cay stop due to weather or sea conditions—a huge win for guests who don’t want to miss their private-island day.

Great Life Lagoon: The Heart of the Island

At the center of the island’s transformation is Great Life Lagoon, a massive 1.4-acre pool—larger than two Olympic-sized pools combined.

Designed with families in mind, the lagoon features:

  • A beach-style entrance for easy access

  • A splash area with playful water features for younger cruisers

  • Two swim-up bars for adults looking to relax

Just steps away, families will also find Splash Harbor, a complimentary splash pad designed specifically for kids.

Surrounding the pool are private cabanas with both pool and ocean views, offering a shaded, more exclusive way to enjoy the day.

Vibe Shore Club: Adults-Only Escape

Adults looking for a quieter, more elevated experience will love the newly opened Vibe Shore Club. This adults-only area, accessible via day pass, features:

  • An exclusive beachfront area

  • A private bar

  • Optional cabanas for rent

It’s ideal for couples or adults traveling without kids who want a more serene island vibe.

Easier Island Navigation

Additional improvements include a new Welcome Center and a tram system, making it easier than ever to get around the island—especially helpful for guests who prefer less walking or want to explore multiple areas throughout the day.

Coming Soon: Great Tides Waterpark

Looking ahead, Norwegian Cruise Line isn’t done yet. Great Tides Waterpark is set to open in summer 2026 and will bring even more excitement to the island.

Planned features include:

  • 19 waterslides, ranging from adrenaline-pumping to family-friendly

  • Tidal Tower, home to eight slides—including the tallest on the island

  • High-speed racing slides, spiraling tube slides, and body slides

  • A nearly 800-foot dynamic river

  • A 9,000-square-foot splash zone for kids

  • Cliffside Cove, featuring the industry’s first cliffside jumps and racer slides

This expansion is designed to appeal to families, thrill-seekers, and multigenerational travelers alike.

Why This Matters for Future Cruises

In 2026 alone, 17 Norwegian Cruise Line ships will offer itineraries that include Great Stirrup Cay—meaning more guests than ever will benefit from these upgrades.

If a private island day matters to you (and for many cruisers, it absolutely does), these enhancements make Norwegian’s itineraries even more appealing—especially for families, couples, and repeat cruisers looking for something new.

Thinking about a Norwegian cruise or comparing private island experiences across cruise lines? I stay on top of these updates so you don’t have to—and I’d love to help you choose the itinerary that fits your travel style best.
