2026 Travel Trend Spotlight: Slow, Scenic, Meaningful Travel
Travel trends are shifting, and honestly, this is one of my favorite changes I’ve seen in years.
As we look ahead to 2026, travelers are moving away from rushed itineraries and “check-the-box” vacations. Instead, they’re choosing slow, scenic, meaningful travel experiences where the journey itself is just as memorable as the destination.
This shift is showing up across the travel world, from premium cruises and immersive land journeys to one standout category that continues to grow in popularity: luxury and scenic rail travel.
Experiences Over Destinations
Today’s travelers are no longer asking, “Where can I go?”
They’re asking, “How do I want to experience it?”
I’m seeing more interest in:
Thoughtfully paced itineraries
Nature-forward travel with unforgettable scenery
Experiences that feel immersive, personal, and intentional
That’s exactly why rail journeys are having such a moment right now.
Why Scenic Rail Travel Is Trending
Luxury rail travel allows you to slow down and truly absorb the landscape around you — no windshield, no traffic, no rushing from point A to point B. Instead, you’re seated comfortably, watching some of the world’s most beautiful scenery unfold right outside your window.
These journeys are designed so the view is the star, and the route itself becomes part of the story.
My Favorite Scenic Rail Journeys Right Now
When clients reach out asking for something different, these are the rail experiences I’m most excited to recommend — and for good reason.
Canyon Spirit — Rockies to Red Rocks
This journey through the American Southwest is an incredible example of slow, scenic travel done right. Canyon Spirit offers 2- and 3-day rail experiences traveling routes such as Denver – Glenwood Springs – Moab or Denver – Glenwood Springs – Salt Lake City – Moab.
The landscapes range from mountain passes to dramatic red rock canyons, creating an unforgettable gateway to iconic National Parks like Arches and Canyonlands. It’s immersive, beautifully paced, and ideal for travelers who want something truly unique. I’m especially excited to experience this journey firsthand myself in November 2026.
Boarding the Wilderness Express in Talkeetna
Wilderness Express — Alaska’s Last Frontier
This rail journey holds a special place for me because I’ve personally experienced it — and the views will stay with me forever.
Traveling between Anchorage, Talkeetna, Denali, and Fairbanks, the Wilderness Express features floor-to-ceiling glass and overhead dome windows, giving you sweeping, uninterrupted views of Alaska’s wild landscapes. Mountains, rivers, forests, and open tundra surround you in every direction. It’s one of the most breathtaking ways to experience the Last Frontier.
Rocky Mountaineer — Canadian Rockies to Banff & Lake Louise
Another favorite for scenic rail lovers is Rocky Mountaineer. This luxury rail journey offers similar glass-dome viewing, but this time through the dramatic peaks, alpine lakes, and rugged beauty of the Canadian Rockies.
Routes lead travelers toward unforgettable destinations like Banff and Lake Louise, where turquoise lakes and towering mountains feel straight out of a postcard. It’s a spectacular way to experience the Rockies without ever feeling rushed.
Why This Trend Matters for My Clients
Lately, I’ve had more clients than ever reach out looking for a travel experience that feels different. Not another packed itinerary. Not a vacation that feels like work.
This trend answers that call.
Slow, scenic rail journeys are ideal for:
Travelers who have “been everywhere” and want something new
Nature lovers, photographers, and National Park enthusiasts
Clients who enjoy luxury but still want a strong connection to the destination
These experiences also pair beautifully with cruises, National Park extensions, and custom pre- or post-travel stays.

Final Thoughts
Travel in 2026 is about intention. It’s about choosing journeys that feel meaningful, immersive, and memorable — not rushed or repetitive.
If you’ve been craving something different, something that allows you to truly experience the destination instead of racing through it, scenic rail travel might be exactly what you’re looking for.
I’ve had several clients reach out asking for a different kind of itinerary — and I truly believe this is it.
Let’s talk about what slow, scenic, meaningful travel could look like for you.
Stay tuned!
Over the next few weeks, I’ll be highlighting each of these scenic rail journeys individually — sharing deeper details, insider tips, and my favorite National Park extensions and cruise pairings to complement each experience. Whether you’re dreaming of the American Southwest, Alaska’s wild landscapes, or the Canadian Rockies, I’ll be showing you how to thoughtfully combine rail, land, and cruise travel into one unforgettable itinerary.
